Tuning Your Drums Learn Drums - How to Tune Your Drums in 3 Simple Steps By Dave Starkey
You will have to tune your drums if you want to get the best sound out of them. A poorly tuned set of drums will sound dull and unpleasant to your listeners. Also tuning your drums regularly will help extend the lifespan of your drum heads saving your time and money. Here are 3 simple steps you can use to tune your drums.
1. Place the Drum Head in Position.
Before you begin to tune your drums you will have an empty drum shell. Clean both the drum shell and the drum head with a dry cloth. This will prevent damage caused by dirt and grit when you begin tuning. Place the drum head on the shell and make sure it fits correctly. It should fit easily onto the drum shell without being too loose.
2. Tighten the Lugs
Once you have the drum shell in place tighten the lugs slightly. You are not trying to tune at the moment. All you want to do it secure the drum head to the drum shell in preparation for tuning. Make sure to stretch the drum head slightly once it has been secured in position. You can do this by pressing down gently on the membrane. This will prevent your drum from going out of tune quickly.
Now it's time to tune the drum to the correct key. It is important to remember here that tightening the lugs one after the other will cause an uneven stretching of the drum head. Instead follow these simple steps.
Pick the lug closest to you. We will call this lug 1. Tighten it 1 full turn.
Next tighten the lug directly opposite lug 1 by 1 full turn.
Then tighten the lug immediately to the left of lug 1 by 1 full turn. We will call this lug 3.
Then tighten the lug directly opposite lug 3 by 1 full turn.
Continue to do this until all the lugs have been tightened by 1 full turn
3. Tune Your Drum
Play a beat close to lug 1 and listen to the sound. If it's correct use the sound at this lug as the basis for tuning the rest of the lugs.
